Google Flights Is Adding Fare Predictions to Help You Decide When to Buy a Plane Ticket

I’ll tell you how it works!

What’s Google Flights Fare Predictor?

I like using Google Flights to save time and money when I search for flights.  And soon, a new fare prediction feature will help folks save even more!

Google Flights Will Soon Recommend When to Get the Best Price on Tickets

Right now, fare predictions are not available throughout the entire site, although it does appear for certain routes.  But it should be available throughout the site in the next few weeks, according to Google.

If a fare prediction is available for your route, there’s nothing extra you have to do.  You’ll see a box inside the search results, along with other tips like cheaper airports in the area, or cheaper fares in the surrounding few days.

Google Flights will tell you to when flights have historically had a fare increase.  And will recommend how long you have before you’ll pay more for the exact same flights!

Fare predictions are expected to be fully available before the busy Thanksgiving and Christmas travel season.  So this is a good way to see how much you can save.  And how long you have to purchase your ticket.

Are There Drawbacks?

Even though you can see when a fare is expected to increase, it’s not a guarantee.  Fares can and will fluctuate.

So if a fare prediction says you have 7 days, for example, to purchase your flight, the price could still increase at any point before then.

And, even though your cheap fare might stick around, that doesn’t mean you’ll get a seat on the flight you want!  If you see a good deal on a popular route, it’s still best to grab it while you have the chance.  Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security because you think you have lots of time.

Finally, Google Flights will tell you when the price of a flight might go up.  But what about down?

Lots of folks might be willing to wait to purchase a fare to save money.  Especially if it’s for a fun trip they want to take but don’t necessarily have to take.  If you want to plan a trip and still have a lot of time, that would be a handy feature to add.

Kayak Provides a Similar Service

If you search for any flight on Kayak Flights, you’ll see a graph in the top left corner with the advice to “Buy” or “Watch.”

Kayak Recommends to Buy These Flights Now

I like the advice to “Watch” certain fares.

Fares Are Forecast to Fall If You See “Watch”

In the example above, Kayak will recommend keeping an eye on a fare decrease.  So it’s up to you whether to purchase your ticket right away.  Or take a chance and save some money.  Google Flights should add a similar feature to their fare predictor!

Bottom Line

In time for the holiday travel season, Google Flights is adding fare predictions to their search results.  This will help you decide when to buy your flight.  And show you how much money you’ll save!

I regularly use Google Flights to search for airline tickets, so this is a welcome addition!  But as always, if you see a great deal, jump on it.  Because seats can sell out before you get a chance to purchase your ticket.

Kayak Flights already has a similar feature, which tells you will prices might go up or down.  But it looks like Google Flights is working on becoming more user-friendly, and more information is always better.  Especially if it helps save money!
