Via One Mile at a Time, there are negative changes coming to the Starwood – Uber partnership.  As of February 1, 2017, you’ll earn fewer Starwood points for Uber rides.

This is unfortunate for folks who liked taking advantage of the deal between Starwood and Uber, when you could earn up to 4 Starwood points per $1 spent (up to a maximum of $10,000) on Uber rides.

The Number of Starwood Points You Can Earn For Uber Rides Is Changing!

Here’s more about the changes involving the Starwood – Uber partnership.

Changes to the Starwood – Uber Partnership

In early 2015, Starwood announced they’d be partnering with Uber, so you could earn Starwood points for your Uber rides.

Originally, you could earn earn 1 Starwood point for each $1 (up to $10,000) in Uber charges per calendar year.

And when you used Uber while staying at Starwood hotels, you’d earn up to 3 additional Starwood points, depending on your Starwood status.

Starting February 1, 2017, You’ll Earn Fewer Starwood Points for Uber Rides

But starting February 1, 2017, you’ll only earn:

  • 1 Starwood point per $2 spent on Uber
  • 2 Starwood points per $1 spent on Uber when you use Uber while staying at Starwood hotels, regardless of your hotel status

Like before, you can only earn Starwood points for up to $10,000 worth of spending with Uber per calendar year.

And you need to have stayed in a Starwood hotel at least once in the calendar year to qualify for bonus Starwood points for Uber rides (a prior year’s stay qualifies you for the month of January).

Starwood – Uber Promotion for February 2017

That said, Starwood has launched a new Uber promotion starting February 1, 2017.

For the month of February 2017 only, you’ll earn 5 Starwood points per $1 you spend with Uber during stays at Starwood hotels.

All other restrictions apply.  Normally, with the new rules, you’d only earn 2 Starwood points per $1 spent with Uber during Starwood stays.

While this is a nice bonus if you have plans to stay in Starwood hotels in February, I wouldn’t switch hotels just to take advantage of the offer.

Bottom Line

Starting February 1, 2017, you’ll earn fewer Starwood points for Uber rides.

This isn’t good news for folks who earned a lot of Starwood points for spending with Uber, because Starwood points can be more difficult to earn than other types of points and miles!

But deals in the miles & points hobby are always changing. 😉
