Here’s a relatively easy way to score ~$30 off your next paid Finnair flight to destinations in Europe and Asia.

Or, depending on the hotel you book, you’ll earn enough points for a 1-way award flight between Finland and Copenhagen, Oslo, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Warsaw, and more!

Explore More of Europe! With the Help of 10,000 Bonus Finnair Points, Your 1st PointsHound Hotel Stay Can Get You a 1-Way Award Ticket Between Helsinki and Warsaw to Visit the 17th-Century Wilanowski Palace

Via Doctor of Credit, you can earn 10,000 bonus Finnair points on your 1st hotel booking with PointsHound when you book by January 31, 2016.

PointsHound is a hotel booking site, similar to Rocketmiles, which offers airline miles for discounted hotel stays.

And at some hotels, you might earn enough for a short-haul award ticket on your 1st stay!  I’ll explain how it works!

What’s the Deal?

You’ll earn 10,000 bonus Finnair points for your 1st PointsHound hotel reservation when you book by January 31, 2016.  If you’ve booked through PointsHound before, you’re not eligible for the deal.  It’s free to join.

While 10,000 Finnair points isn’t quite enough for an award flight, you can use them to reduce the price of a paid Finnair ticket by ~$30.  (I’ll show you how below.)

The 10,000 bonus Finnair points are in addition to the usual number of Finnair points you’d earn for a stay.  So in some cases, you could earn 15,000+ points or more for 1 hotel night.

This is useful if you already collect Finnair points, or want to fly Finnair.  Finnair flies direct to Helsinki from Chicago, Miami, and New York.  Departing from the US, they serve ~70 destinations in Europe and Asia.

Collect Enough Points for a 1-Way Flight

Finnair’s cheapest award tickets start at 12,000 Finnair points 1-way for flights within Finland and Northern Europe.  This includes popular destinations in Denmark, Estonia, Norway, Poland, Russia, and Sweden.

You Could Earn Enough Finnair Points for a 1-Way Award Flight in Finland or Northern Europe From Just 1 Hotel Night!

I did quick search on Google Flights, and 1-way flights from Helsinki to Warsaw and Krakow in Poland were ~$100 or more, even on budget airlines.  So in the above example, paying $191 for a night in Chicago nets you a $100 to $150 flight in Europe.

Interestingly, Finnair offers junior flight awards (discounted award flights for children).  So 10,000 Finnair points is enough for a 1-way child award ticket within Finland and Northern Europe.

But you can use the points in other ways.  Finnair allows you to book paid tickets with a combination of points and cash.  So 10,000 Finnair points is worth ~$30 towards a paid ticket.

Use the Slider to Choose the Number of Points You’d Like to Use Toward a Paid Ticket (It’s a Little Fidgety!)

You can also use Finnair points for:

  • Upgrades to Business Class
  • Finnair lounge vouchers
  • Baggage fees
  • Discounts on shopping through the Finnair Shop

Note:   If you’re buying a paid Finnair ticket and don’t collect Finnair points, remember you can credit the miles to another oneworld partner airline, like American Airlines.

If you frequently book paid hotels, you could earn more Finnair points on subsequent PointsHound stays (typically less than 5,000 points per night).  But this could be a good strategy if you’re saving up for a Finnair award ticket!

Is PointsHound a Good Deal?

PointsHound is an online discount hotel booking service.  As with other 3rd-party sites like Orbitz or Expedia, you won’t earn hotel points (or always have elite status recognized) when you book hotels through PointsHound.

But you will earn airline miles!  And this is a good option for booking independent or boutique hotels which don’t have loyalty programs.  I’d rather earn airline miles than nothing at all!

Earn Airline Miles When You Book Independent, Boutique, or Small-Chain Hotels, Like the Warwick Allerton Hotel Chicago

I did a few searches for hotels in popular cities like New York and Chicago.  The prices on PointsHound were often higher (sometimes slightly) than the cheapest price on Kayak.  So definitely compare prices before you book!

And carefully check the hotel cancellation policy, because it varies between hotels.

If it’s a matter of a few dollars difference, I’d book through PointsHound to earn airline miles.  Do the math to see what works best for you.

Note:   Finnair points are not the only miles & points you can earn with PointsHound.  Other airlines include American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Virgin America, and more.

Bottom Line

PointsHound users can earn 10,000 bonus Finnair points when they book their 1st hotel stay by January 31, 2016.

10,000 Finnair points is enough for ~$30 off a paid Finnair ticket to ~70 places in Europe and Asia.

The bonus is in addition to the usual number of Finnair points you’d earn for a booking.  So you may earn enough for a 1-way Finnair award ticket in Finland or Northern Europe from 1 night!

You can also use Finnair points for upgrades, checked baggage fees, and online shopping.

If you’re booking a paid stay anyway, and like Finnair, this could be a nice bonus for you!
