Emily and I have both kept the Chase Freedom card year after year, because of its rotating category bonuses for everyday expenses.  And there’s no annual fee, so it’s free to keep!

Having a card for a long time can help boost your credit score.  It also helps build a relationship with Chase, which has some of the best travel rewards cards available!

And, you can be approved even if you don’t have a long credit history.

With the Chase Freedom card, you’ll earn:

  • 15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($150) after you spend $500 on purchases in the 1st 3 months of opening your account
  • 2,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($25) when you add an authorized user who makes a purchase within the same 3-month timeframe
  • 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points (5% cash back) on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in rotating quarterly categories when you activate the bonus
  • Unlimited 1X Chase Ultimate Rewards points (1% cash back) on all other purchases

Chase Ultimate Rewards points are worth 1 cent each when you redeem them for cash back.

But, if you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or Chase Ink Bold (no longer available) you’ll have the flexibility to transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to airline and hotel partners, like United Airlines, Southwest, and Hyatt.

When you sign-up for the Chase Freedom card, you’ll earn 15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after completing the minimum spending requirements.

Get Big Travel in Dallas (and in Boston, Melbourne, and Many Other Destinations) With 15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points!

You could redeem them to get $150 cash back.  But if you 1st transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to your Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or Chase Ink Bold account, you can access travel transfer partners, like Hyatt.

5,000 Hyatt Points Is Enough for a Night at a Category 1 Hotel

There are lots of options, especially here in the US.

For example, you could stay at a Hyatt Category 1 hotel like the Hyatt House Dallas / Uptown for a night in June for 5,000 Hyatt points.

A Night at the Hyatt House Dallas / Uptown Costs ~$183. Or You Could Use 5,000 Hyatt Points Instead!

To compare, you’d get $50 if you redeemed 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points for a statement credit.  Your points would be worth 1 cent each.

But in this example, your points are worth nearly 4 cents each when you transfer them to Hyatt for an award stay!

If you stayed 3 nights, the 15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points you’d earn with the Chase Freedom card would be worth ~$550.  For a card with no annual fee, that’s a terrific deal!

Award nights at Hyatt Category 4 hotels cost 15,000 Hyatt points per night.  This category includes fancy hotels, like the Grand Hyatt Melbourne in Australia!

Celebrate the New Year Down Under and Save Over $500 With Chase Ultimate Rewards Points!

I found a room available just in time to see the New Year’s fireworks display!  A room would cost ~$535.  But your 15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points cover the room rate – and you’d be in downtown Melbourne near the festivities!

With the Chase Freedom card, it’s possible to earn over 25,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points in the 1st 3 months:

That’s enough for a night at a Hyatt Category 6 hotel, like the Hyatt Times Square New YorkGrand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa (where Emily and I stayed), or the all-inclusive Hyatt Ziva Cancun in Mexico!

Pair Your Chase Freedom Card With the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or Chase Ink Bold, to Get Stays at Top Hyatt Hotels, Like the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendome!

In fact, if you make the the most of the quarterly bonus categories, you can earn an extra 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per year, which is enough for the fanciest Hyatt hotels like the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendome where Emily and I stayed!

Bottom Line

You’ll earn 15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($150) when you sign-up for the Chase Freedom card and complete the minimum spending requirements.  That’s worth $150 in cash back.

But, if you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Bold (no longer available), or Chase Ink Plus, you can get Big Travel with Small Money by transferring your points to partners like Hyatt!

That way, your points become worth much more – in some cases their value is tripled or even quadrupled, which saves you more money!

15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points is enough for 3 nights at a Hyatt Category 1 hotel, like the Hyatt House Dallas/Uptown.  Or 1 night at a Hyatt Category 4 hotel, like the Grand Hyatt Washington!

When you activate the quarterly bonus on the Chase Freedom card, you can earn up to 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per quarter – up to 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per year!

For a card with no annual fee, that’s an outstanding deal.  And it’s a big reason Emily and I have both kept the Chase Freedom card year after year!
